Exploring Indian Forest Service – S1

Hi,

My name is Vejayanantham TR, cleared IFS (Indian Forest Service -2018) with AIR 50. Let us jump into the topic.

Indian Forest Service – one of the underestimated All India service in India. Even students preparing for UPSC do not have much clue that it is one of the three All India Services which includes IAS and IPS. And yes, it is not IFoS,  the official designation is IFS.

The main reasons why many not aiming for IFS are

  1. Difficulty in clearing first level – You need to be in top 1000 in UPSC prelims all over India to be eligible for IFS mains.
  2. No Regional language in Mains – Only English medium in mains is allowed.
  3. Two optional subjects – And certain optionals are not available in Civil services like Forestry.
  4. General Myth that Indian “Forest ” Service – that you will be posted in Jungles. No it’s absolutely wrong.  95% of your postings will be in towns and cities as like IAS and IPS. DFO is one of the pillars of the district along with SP and DM. You are in the topmost position of bureaucracy and not going to be sitting in deep jungles. Ofcourse you must visit your jungles to supervise and manage it as like SP and DM go for field visits.

Do gothrough the following links to know about this beautiful service along with its Pros and Cons.
